Energise Fuels GPA Scholarships
19th April 2004
Energise is fuelling the future of Gaelic games following the announcement this month by the Gaelic Players' Association (GPA) that it has awarded 12 emerging stars of our games with scholarships from funds generated through the sales of the new isotonic sports drink. The announcement was made in Dublin City University by Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the GPA, and Lynne Malone of energise, C&C Ireland.
The announcement sees the GPA's existing scholarship activity complemented by funding support for 12 very worthy young Gaelic games recipients, including:
- Christy Toyne - Donegal Football
- Kenneth Burke - Galway Hurling
- Brian Dowling - Kilkenny Hurling
- Owen Lennon - Monaghan Football
- Morgan Beirne - Roscommon Football
- Paul Casey - Dublin Football
- Simon Gerrard - Louth Football
- Paul Finlay - Monaghan Football
- Keith Higgins - Mayo Football & Hurling
- James Glancy - Leitrim Hurling
- JP Casey - Westmeath Football
- Sean Kelly - Antrim Football
energise, which was specially formulated to meet the physiological requirements of field sports in Ireland by renowned exercise physiologist Dr. Liam Hennessy, was launched by C&C Ireland last summer and has enjoyed phenomenal success since its launch. The brand's unique partnership with the GPA has resulted in substantial financial support being provided for the GPA and the development of Gaelic games at grass roots level. Its success is also indicative of the passion for Gaelic games and support for our players that exists amongst the GAA community.
Commenting on the scholarship awards, Chief Executive Dessie Farrell said: "The Energise initiative has proven that GAA stars are effective brand ambassadors; that the GAA public feel a strong affinity with players; and the ability to support Gaelic games through consumption of a world class Irish product is an enticing proposition. I would encourage all GAA people to continue to support this product and remind them that 6 per cent of net revenue from every bottle sold is invested directly into Gaelic games through a variety of worthy initiatives including our scholarship program. Indeed, we are already planning ahead for the successful establishment of our proposed youth development program in 2004 under the Chairmanship of Kieran McGeeney and funded by energise."
